our Community
Community is the spirit of every town - but especially here in Revelstoke.
Whether it is improving food security or sponsoring a local team, we are committed to making Revelstoke an even better place to live, work and play! We are proud to be a part of Revy through our partnerships, sponsorships and donations.
FOOD SECURITY
Food security is an ongoing battle for many communities and families throughout Canada. As a major part of the food ecosystem within Revy, it is our responsibility to ensure access to healthy and affordable food.

One way that we're working to improve food security is through our work with the schools in Revelstoke. We established the first breakfast program with Columbia Park Elementary school in 2016 by donating a wholesome breakfast. And thanks to all the hard work of the volunteering parents and teachers, this program has grown from an occasional program in one elementary school to a daily program in all of the elementary schools (as well as the secondary school) in Revelstoke.
We also work in partnership with the Food Recovery Program through Community Connections Revelstoke to reduce food waste. Any food that cannot be sold from our store is donated every week to the Food Recovery Program to be made available to families in need. Additionally, we donate whole pallets of non-perishables to the Food Bank several times a year. To learn more about the amazing work at Community Connections, please visit them here.

Food security also means the physical access of food for our community. It is the top priority in our everyday responsibilities as we work hard to stock our shelves with fresh foods daily. But it also means rising to the extraordinary challenges that come our way; such as navigating covid-19 and washed out highways to ensure that our community is fed. Furthermore, in the broader context of food security, Southside Market is also a proud independent grocery store - independently and locally owned and operated. Within Canada, large corporations dominate the market, controlling 75% of total food sales. This unbalanced competition in the grocery industry only brings unfair pricing for consumers as the power of consumer choice is limited. As a small independent grocer though, we are a legitimate choice and we will always do our best to keep the big guys in check! Improving food security is a key objective as we maintain regular competitive pricing, source from a variety of local suppliers and bulk buy to pass on the savings. If you already support local and independent, we thank you! If not yet, we will only keep working harder to win you over!

To reduce our environmental impact, we work with the Local Food Initiative (LFI) and Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) to compost our food waste. This program allows for the diversion of food waste from the landfill, which greatly contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gasses and creates marketable compost which can be used locally to improve the resilience of our local food systems. Our recycling program also contributes to the community through the donation of the bottle return funds to local fundraisers, non-profits and youth organizations.
